have you tried to convert the subtitle format from .ass to .txt or .srt and than use it as external subtitles ? Try the software like Subtitle-Workshop
try if this make any difference (it should)
This can be a temp fix till there is proper fix found

So that explains why the older versions of xbian worked for me. The styling must have been disabled or broken.

If you are running linux or have a console with sed (mac?) you can do this to get rid of all the blur commands:

sed -e 's/{\\blur.*}//g' test.ass > new.ass
... add an -i and it will do it inline without needing to redirect but you will loose the original file.

I will try removing all the blur/fad/??? stuff from my files this weekend to see if it helps and if it makes things unreadable.

I have extracted the .ass from some of my anime and manually removed all the blurs, and even some extra subs.
And it was still quite choppy :\
have u tried to convert the subs as I mention above ?
probably easier to do than removing blur
