I'm able to find my wifi network, but shortly after I enter the security key I get an error message that says "cannot restart wlan0". What exactly does this mean? How can I fix it?

Also - which is a known problem - have you any "spaces" in your SSID?

indeed this looks like this bug, or wrongly set parameters.
