start with proper report
get proper file info, what container, what codec, etc..
Also what HW you have?PSU rating, USB lead, is the HDD self powered?etc
PI2, HD is powered dock via usb. no codec installed I a stock install.
How were the Bluray movies created?

Also what codec was used? If x265 (HEVC) then there's your problem.

i mean the file you play?what codec and container of the file?

edit: @IriDium was quicker Wink
I use DVDFAB to copy moves to the HD. I think I'm only using the x265. I'm waiting for my MEP2 and VLC to to licenses arrive.
If as you say they are x265 then there is no way you'll get them to play on the RPi2 - They only just play on an Intel i7 quad core.

You'll need to convert them to x264 before they will play. The MPEG or VLC licenses won't help.

^^^ what @IriDium said
Set to solved. RPi2 never be able to play x.265/HEVC videos smoothly
I wonder if we shouldn't have a clear RPi section on the site as a lot of posts get wrongly put in this section (this one too)! ???

XBian started as RPi distro only and all other HW just joined in much later. Majority of users use RPi so most of the stuff is RPi related.
I may have a look into this how much challenging would it be to do a more sections
