Quick question:
For those running the vanilla image available for the Pi3B+ (stretch version) is it safe to update or should we wait?
Thanks.

An unaltered installation... no special configurations and no extras just the updates using apt-get
The image was the one available 2 (or more) months ago for the Pi3B+.

Hi Nachteule
I followed your guide
1) change all stretch to buster in file /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbian.list
2) run sudo apt-get update
3) DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y --allow-downgrades -o Dpkg::Options::=--force-confdef -o Dpkg::Options::=--force-confold 2>&1 | tee /tmp/aptstatus
4) sudo apt-get install --reinstall xbian-update
And I got everything upgraded
ON RPI3 B+
Boot starts but...
KODI does not
errors in kodi upstart
ERROR: Unable to create GUI. Exiting
malloc(): unsorted double linked list corrupted
and error in kodi.log
ERROR: failed to initialize EGL display (EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED)
FATAL: CApplication::Create: Unable to init windowing system
Can you help please?
Thank you

Can you post output of ls -la /usr/local/lib/kodi
Should be something of this on a Pi3
Terminal
root@kmxbilr2 ~ # ll /usr/local/lib/kodi/
insgesamt 55900
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2046 Nov 18 03:03 addons
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Nov 19 03:14 kodi.bin -> kodi-rbpi

You have Kodi 19 from devel repo installed. Maybe not the best idea
Please wait some hours, after 20 o'clock new Leia version 18.5 will be available in stable repository

Any special settings in /boot/config.txt?
Any binary addons enabled, maybe screensaver.shadertoy or visualization.shadertoy?
Very difficult to say. I can't see any issues here, switching between Pi3B and Pi4 always working flawlessly

not that I know of, no screensaver
config.txt is the one that came with your image
could there be something that didn't go right in the upgrade process?
One strange thing is that on RPI4 where everything works, kodi still tells me I have a Stretch version waiting form me!
but:
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
Release: 10
Codename: buster
is there some .conf in upstart that could be wrong?
I did check everything and it seems ok
It is really weird!!!
upgrading to xbian-package-xbmc 18.5
let you know how it goes
thank you
Still same problem

WTF. It might be just a simple thing, but how to figure it out .... hmmm
Could you start Kodi with an empty profile: rename /home/xbian/.kodi folder and start kodi again
Please run sudo ldd /usr/local/lib/kodi/kodi-rbpi to see if there are all libraries found

and here is the sudo ldd /usr/local/lib/kodi/kodi-rbpi
