Running storage from USB - shortskoolbus - 17th Oct, 2013 02:23 PM

Hello Folks,

Pretty new here to the RPI and Xbian, have tinkered with XBMC before on an old laptop... but in general also kind of a linux command line noob, but can usually figure things out from the internet.

So i've been doing some reading and over on the openelec forums, people were talking about moving the storage to a USB drive, but still booting from the SD card. They reported performance gains from doing so, and I'm just wondering does it make the same to do so with xbian?

I couldn't find any posts around here discussing that. And if so, is there a writeup somewhere how to do it?

Thanks!
Kelvin

Moving to an USB usually do not have any or little speed improvements (when Class 10 SD card is used) and this type of setup is mainly done to improve stability or reduce the system corruption what may occur with some SD cards.
If you like you can give it a go by following our HowTo on Wiki http://wiki.xbian.org/USB_Installation
and for further reading you can follow this thread http://forum.xbian.org/thread-427.html?highlight=usb+installation

Thanks - Yes, i have been following that thread and will go ahead and try the procedure per the wiki. I wasn't sure if it was the same as what they did over on the OpenElec forums, since they only point the storage directory to USB in that case.

I'll give it a shot, thank you!
