Cubox-i support - xraxor - 19th Nov, 2013 12:17 PM

I have just ordered a Cubox-i4-pro
https://imx.solid-run.com/product/cubox-i4-pro/

I want to see how fast xbmc runs on it, but I don't want to use other system but Xbian.
http://www.solid-run.com/mw/index.php?title=Debian_and_derivatives

Is it possible to support this? http://www.geexbox.org/ seems to support it.

Pricing and other options available

RE: CuBox Support - rikardo1979 - 19th Nov, 2013 06:35 PM

why did you just didnt ask before you waste your money?
The answer is no as the devs dont have such hardware to work on and test.
And the XBMC development on that device is somewhere far from usable and the XBMC "works" sort of, just with heavy hacks

RE: CuBox Support - IriDium - 20th Nov, 2013 01:05 AM

The Cubox is Arm 7 architecture whereas the RPi is Arm 6 (So they are not compatible).

You should be able to install XBMC under Ubuntu or install the Ubuntu specific XBMC.

Hi guys, @mk01,

I contacted Solid-Run to see if they could help in case someone would like to port Xbian to the Cubox-i boards and I got the below response.

Hi,
We would love to see the Xbian ported in our hardware.
please connect me with the developer, in order to send him a free Carrier One (Our development board).
If you can reply today, We will send him the board tomorrow.

My Best Regards,
"

If anyone desires to work on this please let me know and will reply to Waseem.

@Xraxor. Nice bit of investigative work. Can you confirm that the Cubox is indeed Arm7 architecture.

I'm not too sure how much work would be required to convert Xbian to Arm7 as it is currently compiled for Arm6. However, the real issue will be the testing - as not everyone will have a Cubox just yet but it's an interesting possibility.

Many thanks for the foresight.

@IriDium the guys from the cubox-i forum answered as below
"
CuBox-i has Cortex family of processor which are all ARMv7 instruction set with NEON support.
So all major distributions, including hardfp and softfp should run flawlessly on CuBox-i.

If porting XBian to a cubox means getting a free one, count me in (temporarily Wink ). The same counts for pilight of course.

RE: Cubox-i support - xraxor - 4th Dec, 2013 06:21 AM

@CurlyMo that's great, im not sure how much it would be but the cubox-i seems to be much faster than the Pi. and with all the extra programs xbian offers with the great optimisation, a cubox-i with Xbian would b perfect.
they have four models, the 2 lower end uses a GC880 gpu while the 2 more expensive uses the GC2000, not sure if that would be an issue either.

would you like the board to be sent to you? or mk01? im not sure what to do. they will send just the board which they call CarrierOne for now, this has the hardware of the most expensive cubox, the Cubox-i4Pro.

@mk01 do you have an email address so I can cc you in? pm me

Of course to @mk01 regarding XBian. I retired as an XBian dev. I'm only testing. If they want me to port pilight, they can sent me one.

RE: Cubox-i support - mk01 - 4th Dec, 2013 10:43 PM

@xarox

yes I know I'm in the picture already, I just though it is THAT one (brantje was posting and asking about) when I was posting the shipping address. Doesn't mean change in plans or anything, was just expecting something different at first. This one will be challenging - not sure HOW far we get (I wasn't going such deep for informations still).

But as we say, hope for the best, be prepared for the worst.
