USB 2.0 DVDRW can't read DVD - Levi59 - 10th Apr, 2013 06:40 PM

First of all, please excuse my English which may not always be right.

I come to you to ask for help against an external DVD burner that I recovered and I'd like to use with my Raspberry PI. It works without problem on Seven against it but seems not to be recognized correctly under linux.

General Info:
Xbian Version : 1.0a5
XBMC 12.1 GIT:20130317-0d373cc (Compiled: Mar 18 2013)
Transparency! V5.0.9

I have purchased the licence key for MPEG-2.
Overclock : mode Xbian
Raspberry is powered by an adapter purchased on http://raspberrypi.rsdelivers.com/default.aspx?cl=1
I use a powered USB hub purchased separately also on site. I have an external hard drive 1Tio on it.
SD: This is a Blank 4GB Class 6 SD Flash memory card for sale on the same site as above.
Connection: LAN

Information on the DVD burner:
I plug it on the HUB, it turns on and is able after a mount, with the terminal to see the content of a dvd but it can not read it. He did not respond to the menu "read disk" or eject request. It does not detect either when I change the DVD with the eject button of the drive.

XBMC doesn't support DVD encryption (but the provided link provides a nice workaround).

This solution does not solve my problem completely. I have not tested it yet, but what is certain is that it does not alter the recognition of my DVD burner drive.
I want to use my player normally ie to eject my DVD from xbmc, xbmc should also "sees" the disk change and there have fewer problems mounting ...

I also read that xbmc was not compiled with options for decryption. Is it possible to activate it myself?

The most important is to understand that the XBMC device is not a USB but an optical drive.

I did not see the second part of your issue.

Someone with a USB drive will have to chime in as I have no experience with the hardware.

Well I tested on an old EeePC with Debian Squeeze (Xbian is based on Wheezy I think) and the drive is recognized correctly (it appears as a DVD player, I can eject the disc without problem, VLC can read it ). So it must come from Xbian.

When I plug the disk drive, it nothing happens (normal), if I put a DVD, the title appears in the videos section (still normal).

If I select the DVD in the interface, I am sent to the root system so the first problem, it is not mounted. Therefore, I can not read or eject.

If I mount the DVD by the terminal, I need to have root privileges to eject the DVD and it does not work for XBMC. Trying to read it again, I was entitled to an image that is very short copyright message at the beginning of the DVD so I can not be very far from the solution ...

Have you tried any other Linux distribution for the Pi other than Xbian and have the DVD player work?

i only have one sdcard and i don't want to reinstall all of the system only for testing.
What are my options outside the purchase of another SD card?

Is there a distribution that allows playback of DVDs (encrypted or not) out of the box?

Playback of DVD's probably not (because all use XBMC)

I have the same problem.


My DVDRW worked on Rasbmc, it could read the dvd (orignial) - but it could not play it, because of the known Menu-Issue.

So I installed Xbian and here it does not even mount the disc. I can see it, when i try to set the video-sources, but it only opens the root-menu.


Is there a easy solution? Please answer - because if not, I have to switch the system - the main purpose of my raspberry is - media-center and dvd-player (also for bought dvd)

please keep in mind that DVD support is just experimental on RPi an was never planed to work.
So please stay calm and in hope that someone someday find a time to make a better support

So I've gotten a little farther, bought a crappy $11 USB DVD drive off of Amazon.

The issue I was seeing in the logs pertained to dbus not granting access to org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount. Edit...

/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy

...and switch out the defaults to allow for that particular item. Additionally I added the user xbian to the cdrom group, not sure if that matters anymore since dbus is taking care of this but figured it wouldn't hurt. Restart XBMC.

XBMC should now be able to detect the DVD (if you see the kernel play nice with it in the first place), and try to mount it in some magical dbus way. The "auto play" setting for DVD doesn't seem to work for me. Selected Videos > Files > highlight name of DVD > Press C for menu > Play Disc. This brought me to the DVD menu for whatever disc I had in the drive. That's about as far as I've gotten as trying to play the video spits me back out to the XBMC UI.

i have a BR/DVD/RW usb drive, but have no content. I can put a .avi or .mkv on rw media, but I suppose this is not what you wan't to test?

with genuine DVD Video discs you will fail. as Koen wrote, problem is the licensing and encryptions.

this was even problematic in the real PC world, specials players were needed (licensed with the drive, or bought extra).

You have to enable a flag when xmbc is compiled. With --enable-dvdcss and don't add the --disable-optical-drive flag.

XBMC now supports dvd play internally with dvdplayer, thing is I suppose the RPi uses omxplayer instead of dvdplayer.

I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to encode a dvdiso on-the-fly and play this.
