I doubt it is the SD card. More than likely, Xbian is doing things in the background - especially if it's a new install.
Did you do a sudo apt-get update before the install? If it still persists, can you include the output from dmesg, xbmc.log and vmstat 5 10. Please read before you post How to post a log file If you liked my help, click on "Thanks" to show your appreciation.
