If it is an external drive, I would unplug it and run some tests on it.
Also what is it formatted as? FAT and sometimes FAT32 will cause problems. Can you post the output of dmesg after a bad run if the above doesn't fix the issue. Please read before you post How to post a log file If you liked my help, click on "Thanks" to show your appreciation.
