@Unitec.
I would check that you do not have auto-updates set as @Skywatch advised, also I would disable any update addons you may have installed (like library update). I feel that you can go back to the normal xbian overclock without any issue. As you can still ssh into the RPi there is something else going on. Try again with xbian settings and if it happens again post the output of dmesg and xbmc.log and we'll see what could be the issue.
