Problem watching old videos
I've a problem with playing some old videos on Xbian (1.0 alpha3 and 1.0 alpha 4 too).
I tried to play the same videos on a PC and Totem/vlc play them well.

The XBMC version is: XBMC (12.0-RC1 Git:20121212-afbae11), Platform: Linux (7.0, 3.6.11+ armv6l). Built on Dec 13 2012

The problems are described below:

1. XBMC detects the video duration and it shows the video progress bar, but nothing else happens. There isn't any sound and the screen is Black.
2. XBMC detects the video duration and it shows the video progress bar. I can listen the audio but there isn't video. All black.
3. XBMC detects the video duration and it shows the video progress bar and it reproduces the sound but the program still showing xbmc file list window with the film information.

What's the problem?. It's a bug or a codecs problem?

How can I solve it?

I activated debug traces. I attached xmb log file.

Attached File(s)
.txt  xbmc.log.txt (Size: 114.11 KB / Downloads: 0)

I upgrade XBMC and now errors 1 and 2 are solved, however the 3th problem persist.

This is the error: ERROR: OMXPlayerVideo : Error open video output

I can watch the video on Totem and VLC without problems.

avinfo says:

Los Goonies.avi, 701Mb
video: 512x320 01:49:17 25fps DivX3 791Kbps
audio: 48KHz 01:49:17 Stereo 96Kbps mp3

It's a bug?

Here you are some log information:

Do you have the MPEG2/VC1 licences (because I think that they are needed for this).

RE: Problem watching old videos
I don't have licences. I thought that xbmc has all codecs, like vlc has.
How can I install the codecs? Are not free codecs? If not, why vlc and totem play all videos without buying liceneces?

is not up to XBMC to get the licences as it is only software, but is up to Raspberry Pi to get the licences to decode stuff.
In your computer you got all covered by manufactures too and you pay for it when you buy it.
So if you like the licences for RPi,head over to they web site where you can buy them

RE: Problem watching old videos
I'd like to note that i sometimes have the same issues, however i do not think it has to do with codec licences, as they only occur in library mode, if i go to file mode, it will play fine. Next time it happens i can try to grab a log. OP perhaps if it happens again to you, try using opening the file it's self and see if it wil play right.

It's also completly random, it will happen on videos i have watched on xbian in the past, and i can try the same video a few days later with no problems. It's also never happend on any version of xbmc on my linux machine

BTW i am running XBMC 12.0-rc1 Git:20121212-afbae11 compiled dec 13
I will update my xbmc as per koenkk later today

RE: Problem watching old videos
@Koenkk, I will cut the video with avidemux program without modifying codecs etc , and as you ask me, I will send you a PM with the sample URL.

@rikardo1979, thanks for the information. I didn't know that license is applied in PC price. Now I understand it.

@endo, sometimes I had the same problem, but apparently the last version solves the problem. Upgrade XBMC to Frodo R3 version. I couldn't test it well, but apparently it's solved.

Re: Problem watching old videos
yes,if we talking about HW accelerated decoding than every manufacturer of such device have to comply,so mean they have to pay such licences.
Where Raspberry Pi did it a slightly different way,to keep the cost of device low as possible and also because it is not designed only for multimedia( and most of the people use it for different things) so they dont need such ability.
So RPi have the HW abilities to decode those codecs, but to unlock them you have to pay licensees and activate it in system.
So all of us have a cheap device and who needs those codecs, have to spend a few more quid (un)fortunately Wink
Cool

I have a similar (if not the same problem) as your number 3. Did the codecs resolve this?

I will when I'm back from work, also the report if I find out how to do that properly.

You are talking about the log right? I've checked it already but I'm not sure how to copy and paste the whole thing from Nano, I can get you the relevant bits at least.
