[PROBLEM] displayremotecodes not working

I've added <displayremotecodes>true</displayremotecodes> to advancedsettings.xml to see the codes on screen when I push a button on my remote. But nothing shows on screen.
Anybody got an idea how to get this to work ?

EDIT: just tried mode2 and this gives an error:

root@xbian:~# /etc/init.d/lirc stop

root@xbian:~# mode2
mode2: could not get file information for /dev/lirc0
mode2: default_init(): No such file or directory

To see remote codes just enable debug mode check the XBMC log:
