yes, manual startup worked fine.

but the instructions on the first page told to upgrade also xbian-update...

After you reboot to @beta2 you simply run "sudo apt-get upgrade".

To temporarily fix xbmc not starting you can replace the contents of /etc/init/xbmc.conf with the following (I see the proper fix is on github but I will leave this for now):
