If you do want to upgrade, I succeeded by...
a) edit /etc/apt/sources.list and remove the # from the staging line.
b) sudo apt-get clean
c) sudo apt-get update
d) sudo xbian-config -> 5 -> 3: Select all. Check the install log. If errors, keep repeating the process until there are no longer any errors.

Not the cleanest method but seems to work.

Apologies if this is a silly question. What's the best way to know when the fix for the upgrade issues has made it to the stable repository? I saw a reference in another thread that the issue was fixed in the development repositories, and your reply would imply the fix made it to the staging repository. Otherwise I can't find anything else and I'd rather not do the trial and error approach given how long it has taken me to restore after one bad upgrade.
